How “Forever Chemicals” Polluted the Cape Fear. *MUST READ*

In 2014, the local newspaper Interviewed my grandmother about a chemical leak at a company near her house. She stated that it was first time she heard of anything but she wasn’t surprised. For years the industrial plants across the river from us having given off stinking fumes that can’t be good for the environment or the folks breathing it in. In 2008, Hexion, one of the several corporations along 301 Highway , notified the state of a chemical spill at their plant in the south eastern part of the city. They reported that the chemical was methanol, but the problem was contained. No one was notified, not even City Hall, so ultimately the community wasn’t made aware of the potential hazard.

The news of the Hexion spill made wonder how often does these type of environmental issues happen here in America. I mean Flint, Michigan still doesn’t have clean drinking water, its CRAZY! Hexion isn’t the only company in eastern part of the city that has had a spill. lets not forget about DuPoint off Cedar Creek Rd. The story of DuPoint is even more wild, and they were up to a lot of illegal and sneaky stuff for a long time in states like Ohio and West Virginia (CHECK OUT DARK WATER great Movie with Mark Ruffalo). Ultimately, it was determined that the chemical they were creating was being dumped in the local water, and it was causing cancer in the residents, which lead to a BIG class action lawsuit. The chemical was first created in 1933, for tanks which made it indestructible and later used to coat frying pans, it was called TEFLON. Yeah, as you can image DuPoint went upside down after paying all that money out and change there name and open a nice plant in our back yard.

In 2017, a new “forever chemical “ burst on the scene, its call GEN -X. GEN-X is produced by Chemours (formerly DuPont) right here in Fayetteville, NC. GEN-X was tested in the water in Wilmington and even located in the water in Grey’s Creek. The scary thing about what is happening with these incidents is that the PEOPLE aren’t being notified until after the fact. There is still a lot that we do not know about these chemicals and the lasting effects that they will have on our communities.

-GEN -X POLLUTION CHART-

GenX and other PFAS were measured in air emissions from the Chemours facility and have been found in rainwater and other bodies of water close to the facility. Under a consent order between NCDEQ, Chemours, and the Cape Fear River Watch, Chemours is responsible for characterizing GenX in the environment and reducing or eliminating their emissions through wastewater and air. DEEP CREEK RD. lies on the eastern banks of the CAPE FEAR RIVER in EAST FAYETTEVLLE. The families that come from there have been on THE CREEK for generations, and the sad truth is that these corporations DO NOT care about THE PEOPLE , the only color they care about is GREEN.
